The room was great, and it was medium/large compared with other European hotels in which I have stayed. The service was also great. The front desk will help you schedule tours, hold your luggage, and greet you with a smile. We also really loved the breakfast. Ours was included with our stay, and it was a delicious spread of goodies.
The location is bad for two reasons, but both are not all that bad. First of all, it is a little further from the old part of town than some other hotels. It's still an easy and quick walk though, especially to Mirabell. In addition, our room backed up to trains. I didn't hear them every night, but I definitely heard them from time to time. If you're a light sleeper, this could be a problem.

We stayed 2 nites at this hotel during the Christmas season to visit the Christmas markets- The hotel was 5 min from the train station - we literally walked there with our luggage. It is located in the "new town" section near Mirabell palace and gardens. It is about a 15 min walk to the old town - which we found it very easy to do. The hotel was inpecable, the rooms were great, and the breakfast buffet was excellent. THe only constructive comment was that the reception desk person we first dealt with was not as friendly as we thought she should be. but the rest of the folks we dealt with were outstanding. We felt very safe walking back to the hotel at nite coming back from the old town. If we visit Salzburg again, we would definitely plan to return to this hotel.
“Don't worry about the negative reviews.....”
As usual I checked on TA to see what people thought of the hotel I was staying in and I have to say I was slightly worried about some of their experiences, I shouldn't have been.
The Stiegle brau on Rainerstrasse in Salzburg is fantastic, yes it is next to the train line but they have managed to soundproof all the windows, I was on the 6th floor room 61 next to the running line and heard nothing, I was there for four nights and I am a very light sleeper.
The room was clean as was the bathroom, stocked mini bar (good prices), tea and coffee facilities, air con ( which does need updating, floor six is the top floor it does get warm) the beds were very comfortable with good pillows, TV had an array of stations, loads of wardrobe space, room to room phone, iron and board on request.
The reception staff couldn't help us enough as did the restaurant staff, the daily menu is superb, the breakfast is lovely, bacon, sausage, scrambled egg, meats, cheeses, breads, pastries, fruit, cereal, juice, tea and coffee I mean what more do you want you people who have moaned about the breakfast??
Location is great 10 minutes one way to the old town 10 minutes the other takes you to the train station.
Want a good meal with good beer then head to the Peter Keller which is out the hotel turn left then second left you'll see the sign, it's Salzburg's oldest beer cellar and serves great food and the beer is good, try the cheese and meat platter- fantastic and all very decent prices.
